Processing US Visas

US Embassy at Dublin, Ireland


Non-Immigrant Visa
If you reside in Northern Ireland, go to http://www.usembassy.org.uk/nireland/nivisa.html for information about applying for a visa at the U.S. Consulate General, Belfast.

All applicants must schedule an appointment in order to apply for most categories of nonimigrant visas through Visa Information Service Monday through Friday 08:00-18:30, excepting Irish Bank Holidays. A live operator will schedule your appointment and provide visa information.

All NIV applicants must submit the following documents when applying for a non-immigrant visa:

  • Valid passport
  • One color or black and white photograph, less than 6 months old, 2 inches square (50 mm x 50 mm), against a white background, with your face looking directly at the camera with no headgear (except for religious reasons).
  • Euro bank draft, postal order, or money order made out to "US Embassy" for visa application fee €85.00.
  • Completed and signed form DS-156 Nonimmigrant Visa Application. This form should be filled in online and signed when form is printed.
  • Completed and signed form DS-157 Supplemental Nonimmigrant Visa Application (for all males between 16-45 years and for all applicants ages 16 and over who were born in/or citizens of Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Cuba, Sudan, Syria and Libya).
  • Completed and signed DS-158 Contact information and work history for nonimmigrant visa applicant (for all applicants seeking a student or exchange visitor visa J, F or M).
  • A Swift Post/Swift Pack preaddressed envelope for your passport to be returned by post.

Besides the above documents, certain visa categories require additional documentation. (NOTE: this is not an exhaustive list and presentation of the below does not guarantee visa issuance).

B Visa applicants:
  • Financial proof that you can support yourself during your entire stay in the U.S.
  • Proof of employment, study, or other commitments that will demonstrate that your stay in the U.S. will be temporary
Students or Exchange Visitors (J, F, OR M Visa):
  • A completed and signed DS-158;
  • Documentary proof of funds to cover all expenses;
  • If you are on a J exchange program, you must have a completed Form DS-2019 that matches exactly the name in your passport. Proof that the SEVIS fee has been paid is also required.
  • A Form I-20A-B (for F-1 students) or, Form I-20M-N (for M-1 students) properly completed and signed by the Designated School Official (DSO) and signed by the applicant.
Temporary Workers (H, L, O, OR P Visa):
  • Original I-797 and copy of the petition your employer filed with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Please Note: As of March 8, 2005 blanket L-1 visa applicants are required to pay a $500.00 Fraud Prevention and Detection Fee. The fee is paid at the time of the visa interview.
If you working on a ship or an airline (C1/D Visa):
  • A letter from your employer stating occupation; length of employment; whether the position is permanent or temporary; and your purpose of travel.
Member of the Media (I VISA)
  • A letter from your employer stating occupation; whether your position is permanent or temporary and your purpose of travel and length of stay;
  • Submit evidence of credentials issued by a professional journalistic association;
  • Freelance media workers must also submit a valid contract of employment.

Immigrant Visa
IV interviews are scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays by appointment only. Whenever possible, visas are issued the same day. General information on IV processing is available Monday through Friday by calling the Visa Information Service. Pending case inquiries and appointment scheduling can be done by calling the consulate between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm every day, except Wednesday.

Attorney Representation
Specific permission for an attorney to be present at a visa interview must be requested in advance by fax and granted. The consular officer will discuss problems after the interview, if a G-28 is on file.

Applicants calling from within the Republic of Ireland: (1) 580-47-8472 (Calls cost Euro 2.40/minute including VAT - calls made from a mobile phone may cost more)

Credit Card Payment Option available within the Republic of Ireland and for applicants calling from outside the Republic of Ireland. To use this option please call (+3530 (01) 436-0536. Calls cost 16 euro payable through credit card (Visa or MasterCard). Applicants calling from outside the Republic of Ireland can only use the credit card option. In this case, in addition to the fee, international dialing costs will be charged by your operator.
